Running a small business is like giving birth - except the labor pains never go away.

This may sound a bit harsh - but then again, so is giving birth.

Reality check: The business never goes away! It's with you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, just like a baby. It can get pretty uncomfortable and, yes, it often kicks you in the ribs. And yet, there is no quitting. No "I'm done." Just like having that baby, there's no going back.

Unlike pregnancy, a business (hopefully!) lasts much longer than 9 months. As a small business owner, you've got to learn how to cope with the chronic discomfort.

Here are a few suggestions that will help you navigate those labor pains and enjoy the development of something worth cherishing.

  • Don't push too hard.
  • Have a great coach.
  • Rely on those around you to help.
  • Focus on the joy of the results.
  • Know you have created something precious.

And most importantly:

  • Don't forget to breathe!
